Medical Devices: The Heart/Lung Machine PDF Print E-mail
J. Gordon Electronic Design has been involved in development of two generations of heart-lung machines. Each machine is a network of independent systems, each communicating with others while performing monitoring and control functions.
The heart/Lung machine provides artificial lung and heart functions during open heart surgery or heart transplant. A modular system can be configured to customer needs by simply plugging in subsystems.

Monitoring modules measure patient blood pressure and temperature, as well as maintain timers and displays. A safety module stops blood pumps in the event an unsafe condition is detected.

A device referred to as the communications module gathers data from all other systems in the internal network, and transfers this data to an external system. This external system can be a lap-top computer or the hospital's information services network.

J. Gordon Electronic Design has been involved in development of two generations of Heart/Lung Machines over a period of several years. Each machine is actually a network of independent systems, each communicating with others while performing control and monitoring functions.

J .Gordon Electronic Design assisted in development of design specifications, maintained detailed documentation, developed custom electronic hardware and software, and coordinated efforts with a large team of mechanical and electrical engineers.
